Nguyen Talks Win Over Straus
Dat Nguyen spoke with interviewer Cyrus Fees after defeating Daniel Straus at BKFC 38 last Friday.
Nguyen defeated Straus, a former Bellator MMA champion, by unanimous decision in an exciting, competitive bout.
He had to deal with adversity. Nguyen had swelling under both eyes, and also lost a point for a low blow in round 3.
Fight Tougher than Expected
The fight was tougher than anticipated, according the former BKFC bantamweight champion.
““First of all, I want to thank God for this victory. He’s the greatest,” Nguyen said.
“He came to fight. He did more than what I expected. He’s a warrior.”
Nguyen’s victory ended a 16-month layoff. The last time fans saw Nguyen, he was on the losing end of a close decision to BKFC Lightweight Champion Luis Palomino.
“I Wanted to Slug”
According to the fighter, he didn’t feel as sharp as normal.
“I’m a little rusty. I’m not performing my best, I know that. I’m only gonna improve,” he said.
“After two rounds, I knew it was gonna be a tough fight. I had to pace myself, use my jab.”
“I didn’t do what I wanted to do today. I didn’t listen to my corner much. I wanted to slug.”
Nguyen’s choice to slug with the bigger Straus was a good one for fans. The fight was competitive, with the smaller Nguyen’s body attack wearing Straus down.
After 5 rounds, two of the judges scored the fight a draw. Nguyen then outworked Straus to win the overtime round and the fight.
Now fighting at featherweight (145 lbs), Nguyen is interested in facing the winner of the upcoming featherweight title match between Kai Stewart and Louie Lopez.
“That’s what I’m hoping for,” he said.
